The beads were coated with the chemical 1,4-butanediol that caused food poisoning in children who accidentally swallowed them,'' the bureau's statement said.
Last week it went on stream with a capacity of 75,000 tons/year to meet rapidly growing world and local demand for BDO and derivatives - such as 1,4-butanediol "one comma four".
They are produced by melt polycondensation of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), 1,4-butanediol and a poly(tetramethylene ether)glycol (PTMEG), namely a DMT process.
