In addition to the 10 regional AETCs funded by the new grants, HRSA also funded one National Minority AETC to build capacity for HIV/AIDS care among minority health care professionals, with special emphasis on building capacity in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges.
A 1993 study showed that providers trained in AETCs were more competent with regard to HIV issues and more willing to treat persons living with HIV than other primary care providers.
