Last year, AHIMA called upon Health and Human Services--the
code-set maintenance organization for the United States--and the
health-care industry to expedite the adoption and implementation of
ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets, rules and guidelines. Ahima of the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine in Philadelphia has suspected since adiponectin's
discovery that it might also target the brain, as leptin does. In fact, AHIMA points to the suitability
of its own members to fulfill this role in the hospital environment
because they are aware of state and federal laws that apply to health
information, understand and direct the flow of patient information
within the organizations that employ them, understand the nature of
technologies that help manage sensitive information, advocate for the
patient's privacy rights, and support patient privacy in their
