The ATNR has been theorized to play an important role in normal development of human movement by facilitating early visual inspection of the hand, and thus eye-hand coordination, as well as by modifying newborn symmetry.
Considering that primitive reflexes (including the ATNR and tonic labyrinthine reflex) are reportedly stronger in the supine position than when in upright adaptive positioning devices, the freestyle position would be expected to lead to greater difficulty controlling the position of the head than when seated.
It would be appropriate, therefore, to include duration of standing but not ATNR in an evaluative measure, despite the clinical importance of both to overall motor behavior.
