The name for the A-T protein is ATM, and the name for the ARSACS protein is sacsin and the name for the AVED is named the vitamin E binding protein.
Some of these rare recessive ataxias are more frequent in particular regions of the world, such as North Africa for AVED, Western Quebec for RSACS (or ARSACS) and Finland for IOSCA.
It is therefore striking that the clinically similar FRDA and AVED seem to be caused, respectively, by an excess of free radical production and by a reduction of free radical inactivation.
