It has been more than 20 years since the human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) began
to appear and Andrew Ignatieff is hoping that General Synod 2004 will be
a turning point in the church's response to this important health
issue. Since 1982, AIDS surveillance, a partnership among county officials
and medical service providers, has identified over 47,600 persons
diagnosed with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Secretary-General Kofi Annan met with six of the world's
leading pharmaceutical companies on 5 April in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands to agree on what further steps need to be taken to improve
access of developing countries to better health care, and HIV (human
immunodeficiency virus) and HIV-related medicines, as part of further
action to combat acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), including
prevention, education and research. |
