He was diagnosed as having adenocarcinoma of unknown primary, histologically most consistent with an upper gastrointestinal tract origin.
[3, 5-8] Recently, various investigators have explored new applications for TTF-1 antibody in diagnostic surgical pathology; these potential applications include supporting the pulmonary origin for an adenocarcinoma of unknown primary (since extrapulmonary adenocarcinomas are almost always TTF-1 negative),[3, 5, 7] distinguishing pulmonary adenocarcinoma from mesothelioma,[9, 10] and distinguishing between pulmonary small cell carcinoma and Merkel cell carcinoma.
