Banks, 68, is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and his novel “The Sweet Hereafter” was made into an Oscar-nominated film in 1997.
In addition, he has been awarded the National Book Award, the Gold Medal in Biography from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Francis Parkman Prize.
In 2003 Sierra was awarded the Academy Award in Music by the American Academy of Arts and Letters for his "brilliant music, mixing fresh and personal melodic lines with sparkling harmonies and striking rhythms .
