When an American Association for the Advancement of Science study
described science textbooks as "full of disconnected facts that
neither educate nor motivate," there wasn't much the education
community to celebrate. In a rigorous analysis of 12 middle school mathematics textbooks by
the American Association for the Advancement of Science, only four
recently published series received high ratings, while the other more
well-established textbooks were rated as unsatisfactory. Several outspoken researchers--including Leon Lederman, president
of the American Association for the Advancement of Science -- have
charged recently that the United States risks losing its supremacy in
science because Congress isn't giving federal agencies enough money
to fund all the worthy research proposals they receive. |
