Nasser Zawia, an associate professor of pharmacology
and toxicology at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, and his
colleagues found increased expression of amyloid precursor protein (APP)
and its product, [beta]-amyloid (which is a hallmark of Alzheimer
disease), in aging rats that were exposed to lead shortly after birth. Amyloid precursor protein (APP) usually helps repair damaged nerve
cells. Mice genetically engineered to produce higher-than-normal
amounts of human beta-amyloid or the amyloid precursor protein can
develop beta-amyloid plaques and, in some cases, show memory impairment,
such as difficulty navigating a maze. |
