Animal Legal Defense Fund executive director Stephen Wells said in a letter to Mayor Frank Roberts that Yost was put on probation in California for possessing a bear, had an animal that bit a child in Tennessee during an exhibition, and is accused in a lawsuit of beating and punching chimpanzees while training them to perform. Steve Ann Chambers, president of the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), points out that ships, municipalities, trusts and, increasingly, multinational corporations (through what Kalle Lasn describes in Culture Jam as "their own global charter of rights and freedoms, the Multinational Agreement on Investment"), have the standing in the courts that is denied to animals. But the issue caused another lawyer, Joyce Tischler, director of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, to give up meat: "I don't eat my clients," she says. |
