Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (Madison, WI) and Harvard College (Cambridge, MA) have patented mammalian anthrax toxin receptor polypeptides and polynucleotides encoding same as well as related polypeptides and polynucleotides, vectors containing the polynucleotides and polypeptides, host cells containing related polynucleotide molecules, and cells displaying no anthrax toxin receptor on an exterior surface of the cells-minus cell lines and animals.
It encodes a cell-surface protein that the scientists dubbed anthrax toxin receptor.
After protective antigen and the other anthrax toxin components are produced by the bacteria, protective antigen binds to the anthrax toxin receptor on cell surfaces and forms a protein-receptor complex that makes it possible for the other anthrax toxin components to enter the cells where they become active.
