The types of names include the approved item name (AIN), generic nomenclature, NSN nomenclature, colloquial names, and end item identification.
Despite its lackluster name, Public Law 436 standardized many procedures for identifying and cataloging supply items and ensured that each item purchased by the Federal Government is identified, classified and numbered according to a single cataloging system made up of a unique dictionary of approved item names with their corresponding requirement codes (attributes) and validation tables.
