Menem's pardons--which he said would "close a sad and black stage of Argentine history" and foster reconciliation among Argentines after years of violent, ideological conflict--prompted widespread protests (see Chronicle 1989-07-27, 1989-08-15, 1989-10-02 and 1989-10-24). It is safe to assume, however, that poor Argentines are less able to afford beef than the urban middle class-meaning that the diet of the consuming middle class contains enormous quantities of beef. This opera prima is stylistically conventional, but it is very appealing in terms of its human drama and urgent socieconomic themes: housing problems and the current lack of well-paying jobs for both young and old Argentines who want and need to work. |
