He received many professional awards including a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Minnesota in 1990, a Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers in 1991, Oregon Scientist of the Year in 1997 and a Distinguished Service Award from the UO in 2002.
