The bill expands the list of diseases presumed under law to be related to a veteran's experience as a prisoner of war to include atherosclerotic heart disease, hypertensive vascular disease, complications from those two diseases, stroke and complications from a stroke.
A coroner's report listed the cause of death for Robert Cooke, 77, of Newhall as atherosclerotic heart disease, a degeneration of the arteries.
Though not a cure, the procedure is intended to alleviate symptoms of atherosclerotic heart disease and to improve quality of life.
