The audiolingual method that appeared between the mid-1950s and early 1960s was an expression of renewed utilitarian concerns at a time in education that sought to make diffusion of knowledge useful to national economic prosperity.
The Audiolingual Method incorporated much from The Direct Method.
The Prussian (Berlitz) Method and, later, the Direct and Audiolingual Methods redirected the principal proficiency-oriented goals from reading and writing to listening and speaking.
