Yet 90 per cent of the region's available water resources are today consumed by irrigated agriculture, which in no country contributes more than 20 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product and in some places only five per cent.
Despite having a reputation for wet weather the UK actually has less available water per head than many European countries including France, Italy and Greece.
Authorities are assessing whether available water in the dams is adequate till the arrival of next monsoons.
