Arabic includes several distinct and almost mutually unintelligible varieties of one basic language. These responses intimate that students bring a familiarity with the basic language of theory which they can exploit to enrich their formalist analysis of character without having to be burdened with the responsibility of "learning theory" at the survey of literature level.
