Professor Christopher Byrne, with colleagues Dr Felino Cagampang and Dr Kim Bruce, of the University's School of Medicine and researchers at King's College London, conducted the study, funded by the BBSRC.
BBSRC chief executive Professor Douglas Kell said investigating declines in bee numbers formed a "significant part" of work to ensure food security for the UK.
Prof Douglas Kell, whose biotech group BBSRC funded research, said: "Computers play a fundamental role in the scientific process, which is becoming increasingly automated, for instance in drug design and DNA sequencing.
