BTO researchers believe this is because heat that escapes from buildings and factories warms up urban areas by several degrees. That is why the BTO and our partners are working together, targeting research at understanding why migrant birds are in decline. Even with Environmental Stewardship schemes in place which pay some farmers not to plough until after February 14, there is still a lean period with insufficient food for many species before they begin nesting, scientists at the BTO said. |
