I read with interest the news (OT, April 9) that Professor David Thomson, on behalf of BUCO, will host a meeting to determine why candidates for optometry degrees are not of sufficient academic calibre.
Of course, the BUCO will argue that academic standards need to be raised to do this.
Professor David Thomson, Head of Optometry at City University, set the scene by giving the background to why he had called for the gathering, which emerged as an idea after a meeting with BUCO
, the British Universities Committee of Optometry.
Professor David Thomson, head of Optometry at City University and speaking on behalf of BUCO
, said: "Over the past decade the number of people applying to study Optometry and Dispensing has slowly declined while the number of training places has increased.
Supported by BUCO
(the British Universities Committee of Optometry) it will take place on March 8-9 in Brighton.
