Maurice went on to become one of the three founder members of BARLA, the British Amateur Rugby League Association, the others being Tom Keavney and Jack Clayton.
Varkulis, a former BARLA International, moved from Leigh Academy to Warrington Wolves in 2003 where he scored 30 tries in 24 games for the Academy side before signing for Rochdale Hornets where he made his name under Bobbie Goulding.
The Widnes-based amateur side won the GMB BARLA National Cup last Sunday, beating National Conference side Ince Rosebridge 23-8 in the final at Fylde RUFC.
