He had been fishing with his brother on an outcrop about 25metres off the shore near Eyemouth, in Berwickshire.
The Berwickshire and North Northumberland coastline is well known for its dramatic scenery and wildlife, but also hosts an array of colourful marine life.
The 39-year-old from Eyemouth in Berwickshire became the first Scot since his uncle Ian Lawrence in 1974 to be crowned Mr Universe - adding to the Mr World title he won earlier this year.
