Beautifully shot in big close-ups, usually linked with fast panning shots from face to face, this sequence creates an atmosphere of warmth, enjoyment and community, involving people who feel themselves French yet set apart by culture and custom.
You could tell it was a gritty drama because there were shaky camera shots, lots of zooming, big close-ups, focus-pulling, not so much music as a dramatic drone sounding throughout and young men being arrested while in bed and marched off in their underpants.
The visuals have purple patches, too (the wicked guard seen from above at the bottom of a spiral walkway as if he were already in the pit of hell), but mainly the camera nestles close to the guards and cons as they converse, josh, and bicker, and the big close-ups make us the intimates of these men as well as their audience.
