The phenomenon is called bioluminescence because it is light produced by living organisms rather than by outside sources - but it is also known as Sea Ghost or Fire of Sea. The report provides insights into the function of fireworm bioluminescence and moves scientists closer to identifying the molecular basis of the light. But it's been hard to say for sure what bioluminescence is for because scientists can't spend much time in the deep sea. |
