These preliminary brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, are machines that could link patients' fully functioning brains to the outside world. Donoghue provided an overview of brain-computer interfaces, such as Cyberkinetics' BrainGate System, that enable direct communication between the brain and external devices, including computers and even wheelchairs. He and his team of researchers used a prosthesis called a brain-computer interface -- consisting of electrodes attached to a subject's head -- to record brain waves. |
