Some two-thirds of national bills require the approval of the state premiers sitting in the Bundesrat. The Federation of German Industry (BDI), for example, has delivered a position paper to the Bundesrat, the legislative chamber that represents Germany's 16 states on national issues, warning against the high costs and the flood of data involved in implementing such legislation. Once the Bundesrat approved that amendment on 1 December, 2000, by the necessary two-thirds majority, German women were given the "green light" to join the Bundeswehr: they got the right to enlist as volunteers for service in combat units. |
