It is worth pointing out that the 1833 Act only came about because of the campaigns in Britain by abolitionists, including Africans such as Olaudah Equiano and Ottobah Cuguano, who had always wanted the abolition of the enslavement not just the so-called trade, and the continuing revolts by enslaved Africans in the Caribbean and South America, such as Bussa in Barbados, Jack Gladstone in Demerara (in present day Guyana), and Sam Sharpe in Jamaica.
