COSATU worked with the African National Congress (ANC) to mobilise for elections in the early 1990s (Hirschsohn, 2007). Following a string of protest actions in South Africa, Mbeki feared that the million-member-strong COSATU, with the influential yet small SACP, might eventually form a party to oppose or depose the ANC. This, despite threats to COSATU members from sections of the pro-Israeli lobby, and despite severe provocation. |
