The failure to renew the CPMF may stymie Brazil's efforts to win an investment grade credit rating, which would lower borrowing costs, Schwartsman said. The program includes an extension of the CPMF financial transactions tax until 2004, higher import taxes and lower taxes on exports, higher fuel taxes and revamping of the current sales tax. If the proposed law allowing the taxman to see bank accounts is repelled, the government is hoping to hang on to CPMF even after the levy is lifted, by telling taxpayers to claim it back. |
