SANTA PAULA - The popularity of the avocado is reflected in a record year for Calavo Growers of California, the 1,600-member cooperative that has a 37 percent share of state's avocado market with operations in Santa Paula, Temecula and Mexico. A box of 24 to 96 avocados, which generally sells for $12 to $33 wholesale, is currently commanding only $6 to $19, said Robin Osterhues, marketing director for Calavo Growers of California, a cooperative. If even 1 percent of that walks away, that's a million-dollar illegal industry," said Carlos Vasquez, who oversees San Diego's field operations for Calavo Growers of California, which produces about one-third of the 300 million pounds grown statewide. |
