Indeed, and a cursory glance at an A-Z map shows just how well connected Stratford already is in terms of overground and underground rail; importantly, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link linking Brussels, Lille and Paris directly to London, will be stopping at Stratford before terminating in St Pancras Station in central London. Signature projects include Hoover Dam, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the Kuwait oil fires, the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel, Iraq reconstruction, the Three Mile Island cleanup, Jubail Industrial City, Hong Kong International Airport, and the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). Given the depressing, defeatist history of Britain's railways over the last half-century and more, it is a most cheering sight to see the new Channel Tunnel rail link leap across the Medway, but the structure that carries it is scarcely distinguishable from, and no more inspiring than, the adjacent bridge that carries the M2. |
