The researchers demonstrated that, in mice, proteins known as extracellular matrix chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans form 'neural nets' in the brain that protect against the erasure of memory.
This process clears the cellular and non-cellular material from the tissue: cells, cellular debris, axons as well as chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPG), a naturally occurring inhibitor to axon regeneration.
