The buses, which are powered by Ballard fuel cells, have been on the road since late 2003 as part of the Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE), Ecological City Transport System (ECTOS) and STEP (Sustainable Transport Energy for Perth (STEP) programs.
The recent launch of the Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE) project -- a collaborative effort between GVB (a Dutch public transport company) and Shell Hydrogen -- is one effort initiated by the EU toward large-scale application of renewable energy sources.
Other fuel cell and hydrogen activities in Latin America, South America and Spain include: -- DaimlerChrysler has delivered the first fuel cell powered Citaro city bus to Madrid, as part of the Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE) and Ecological City Transport System (ECTOS) projects.
