The buses, which are powered by Ballard fuel cells, have been on the road since late 2003 as part of the Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE), Ecological City Transport System (ECTOS) and STEP (Sustainable Transport Energy for Perth (STEP) programs.
The recent launch of the Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE) project -- a collaborative effort between GVB (a Dutch public transport company) and Shell Hydrogen -- is one effort initiated by the EU toward large-scale application of renewable energy sources.
