The Cognition and Technology Group at Vanderbilt (CTGV, 1990) described anchored instruction as an approach that helps alleviate the problem of what Whitehead (1929) called "inert knowledge," that is, the type of knowledge that people can recall when prompted, but cannot recall spontaneously during problem solving.
The design of the materials tested is based on the concepts of "anchored instruction" (Bransford, Sherwood, Hasselbring, Kinzer, & Williams, 1990; Cognition and Technology Group at Vanderbilt (CTGV), 1993a) and "flexibly adaptive instructional design" (Schwartz, Brophy, Lin, & Bransford, 1999a; Schwartz, Lin, Brophy, & Bransford, 1999b).
