In Massachusetts, the ban may have the potential to accelerate a drop in cigarette sales, which are now half what they were when the state began its comprehensive tobacco control program in 1993. The study recommends an increased emphasis on state-level comprehensive tobacco control programs (CDC, 2003). Their smoking rates have decreased by about 50% since their comprehensive tobacco control program began in 1989, and their rates are now lower than any other state except Utah (which has a high population of Mormons who do not smoke for religious reasons). |
