A recent article in the American Journal of Surgery demonstrated that the vascular graft performed similarly to the requirements of the DOQI guidelines for native arteriovenous fistulae and can substantially benefit the dialysis patient with complex or difficult access requirements. Much of the credit goes to our clinical researcher collaborators who were quick to demonstrate its efficacy and money savings, and the National Kidney Foundation who embraced vascular access monitoring in its 1997 DOQI Guidelines. DOQI (Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative) guidelines recommend arteriovenous fistulas as the first choice for vascular access, however, catheters are frequently required as a bridge access and many times as a permanent access. |
