He is from Kent, and although he passed the 11-plus, there were not enough grammar school places so he spent 18 months in a secondary modern before a place came up at Dartford grammar school for boys.
The son of a milkman, he was born in Peckham and won a scholarship to Dartford Grammar School where he met the young Mick Jagger and witnessed the birth of the Rolling Stones.
Former Dartford Grammar School pupil Mick ditched a degree course at the London School of Economics in 1962 to form the Stones with Keith, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Brian Jones.
