Clocking in at more than 75 minutes, the Los Angeles quartet's first album since 2001's multiplatinum ``Lateralus'' shifts from melodic knockout punches that build from a whisper to a scream to opaque, goth-sounding workouts that wouldn't be out of place coming from Dead Can Dance or Sigur Ros. Lisa Gerrard, formerly of the groundbreaking group Dead Can Dance, burst upon the film scoring scene after composing music to The Insider, which garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score. The female half of the influential transcultural duo Dead Can Dance seems perpetually amused while discussing the history of a group that was often given the eyeliner-streaked ``goth'' label simply because of the word ``Dead'' in its name. |
