Under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Amendments Act of 2007, which became law last September, the FDA is looking at requiring manufacturers of medical supplies to apply unique device identifiers (UDI), such as RFID technology, to individual items in order to track them along the supply chain.
The FDA has already said that it envisions a unique device identifier that contains more information than is found in drug barcodes and includes specifics like the manufacturer; make and model; the device's unique attributes (size, length, quantity, etc) and the serial number, lot number and expiration date.
Once connected with the EMM Server, the EMM Agent provides critical information to IT about the user's device including device identifiers such as model type, supporting carrier, software version and an indicator as to whether the device is jail broken (a term used to refer to when a phone has been loaded with non-approved applications not available on the Apple App Store).
