Ten years ago, I was at a community dialogue on race in California, when an Iranian woman asked me who were included in "people of color. Increasingly, he became a "public intellectual" by engaging the scholarly community and America itself in a dialogue on race. But come now--the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, the CETA jobs program, the national debate after the Rodney King riots, Enterprise Zones, workfare, Bill Clinton's National Dialogue on Race, welfare reform, No Child Left Behind, the Faith-Based and Charity Initiatives--can we really pretend that Katrina is showing us that America has "ignored" black poverty? |
