The difference in pay between highly experienced teachers and new administrators is even smaller and in some cases does not reflect any significant salary improvement for the new school leader who has left the classroom. Becoming a colonel or general for a Russian officer today (given the purely symbolic difference in pay that goes with the ranks) is more in the nature of a moral incentive and some guarantee of getting a job at 50 and 55, respectively. Though there were actually more practical reasons for the difference in pay between the two editors, the anecdote illustrates the complicated ethical dynamics of the ethnic press. |
