Environmental Protection Agency has adopted rules that limit the amount of disinfectant byproducts and more stringent rules are on the horizon, prompting the DWP and other providers to begin switching to chloramines. s problems were apparently caused by an alteration to its water treatment protocol designed to bring the city's water into compliance with new standards under the Disinfectant Byproduct rule of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Fitch notes that some utilities are affected more than others by continuing ramp-up of mandates, including ones for sewer overflows, reduction of contaminant loads in threatened waterways, and microbial and disinfectant byproduct drinking water contamination. |
