Two of these, the Surface Water Directive and the Sampling Directive, concern the use of surface water as a source of drinking water; a third, the Drinking Water Directive (4,5), is intended to ensure a wholesome water supply for drinking and for food and drink manufacture.
We chose these values because 25 mg/L is the recommended nitrate level in drinking water as defined by the EC Drinking Water Directive (29).
Regulations such as the EU Drinking Water Directive (98/83/EC) and the Bathing Water Directive (Council Directive 76/160/EEC) aim to control the quality of water supplied at the point of domestic use and the quality of bathing water, respectively.
