A variety of methods can be used, such as air-displacement plethysmography (ADP), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), computerized tomography (CT), dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), hydrostatic (underwater) weighing and near infrared reactance. Researchers measured bone mineral mass (g), density (BMD, g/cm2), and body composition from dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and estimated proximal femur section modulus (bone bending strength). Secondary analyses will examine (1) the effect of the therapy on the functional muscle-bone unit, (2) the impact of pubertal stage, physical activity, and disease characteristics on the response to the therapy, and (3) the sensitivity of traditional dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) measures of BMD to treatment effects. |
