ESO said the discovery was "made possible by combining two of the most powerful ground-based telescopes in the world:" the Very Large Telescope at Chile's Paranal Observatory, and the National Astronomical Observatory's Subaru Telescope, in Japan. This decision reversed a Tax Court holding that because unrelated parties in a cost-sharing agreement did not have to share ESO costs, related parties also did not have to share these costs. This gorgeous starscape serves as the first of three extremely high-resolution images featured in the GigaGalaxy Zoom project, launched by ESO within the framework of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009). |
