Victor Carrion, a child psychiatrist at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University and director of its early life stress research program, explained that living through an event like Katrina "is something terrible developmentally. The effect of LD classification on need for achievement may be related to one of the findings of the Watt, David, Ladd, and Shamos (1995) study comparing successful individuals who had experienced early life stress with successful individuals who had not experienced such stress. Carrion, assistant professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at the medical school and director of Stanford's early life stress research program, and his collaborators speculate that cognitive deficits arising from stress hormones interfere with psychiatric therapy and prolong symptoms. |
