To help ensure the security of this food source, government officials meeting at the August 2005 Secretariat of the Economic Community of West African States endorsed the Abuja Declaration on Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture in Africa. It also decided to transfer authority to UNOCI from the expiring mandate of the United Nations Mission in Cote d'Ivoire (MINUCI) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) forces on 4 April 2004.
