The rail gun, chosen staple of games like "Quake" and "Terminator 3," may soon find its way into reality as the Corps considers an electromagnetic gun, or rail gun, to replace the M-1A1 Main Battle Tank's 120 mm M-256 main gun. It was in the mid-1980s when Maxwell Laboratories, as it was formerly known, was contracted by the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization to develop a high energy-density, thin-film capacitor to provide a "pulse" of power for space-based electromagnetic guns and accelerators. |
